John: Richton Park tutor
Certified Tutor
I grew up in Minnesota and went to college in Madison, Wisconsin. While those are nice places, I love Texas and have no intention of living in that cold weather again. I moved to Austin seven years ago for graduate school, where I received a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature. During school I taught English literature, Spanish, and Portuguese. My strengths are definitely writing, literary studies, and foreign languages. My studies also branch into the social sciences such as History and Political Science (my B.A. is in the latter).
I enjoy teaching in the classroom, but really appreciate the one-on-one dynamic of tutoring. The constant direct communication allows the student and tutor to focus on precisely what the student needs to learn or what skills they could most benefit from improving. Most of my tutoring has been with college and high school students, but I have worked with elementary and middle school aged students as well.
My picture was taken at Taos Pueblo, New Mexico, and in my free time I like exploring Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado by car. I have a water-loving dog, so I try to bring her camping as much as possible. My other major hobby is music: I play guitar and (not very well) piano. I also watch a lot of comedic tv shows, movies, and stand-up.
I look forward to working with clients on courses and skills of the Humanities, from basic reading and writing to literary analysis.
