While I was studying Public Policy at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, I decided that I wanted to teach high school math so that I could have a direct impact on helping students graduate from high school and attend college.
I taught high school math for five years in Baltimore City and DC: Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry. As a teacher, I used relationship building, well planned lessons with clearly aligned and scaffolded practice and data-driven instruction to lead my students to impressive growth. While teaching at Thurgood Marshall Academy PCHS in DC, I integrated project based learning and blended learning through instructional technology such as IXl and Braingenie to remediate skill gaps and enhance the growth of my students. At TMA, I led my students to impressive results on the PARCC, with 81% of students scored at a Level 3+, making TMA the fourth highest performing school in DC. I pursued my Masters of Science in Education at Johns Hopkins University while I was teaching and currently possess a Standard Professional Certificate for Secondary Mathematics (7-12) from the state of Maryland.
As a teacher, I love working with students one-on-one and in small groups, because it gives me a chance to know students as unique individuals and enables me to assess their understanding and remediate skill gaps in order to improve their content mastery. As a teacher, I set high expectations my students, because I want them to achieve their full potential, but I make it clear that I am there to support them along their academic journey.
My favorite part of teaching math is convincing kids who believe that they cannot succeed at math that they can succeed this confidence building is key. I love tutoring Pre-Algebra, Algebra and Geometry, because these subjects contain so many relevant skills that students must master, not to just succeed in higher level math, but to succeed in almost all careers.
