What is your teaching philosophy?
Every student has his or her own learning style. I am skilled at tutoring, since I have tutored hundreds of students and can easily adapt and cater to the student's learning techniques. I can teach a single concept in different ways.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would get to know them and see what their best learning method is. I have various tutoring techniques and can teach concepts thoroughly. I want to know their subject background and capabilities.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Inspiring a good work ethic is my goal in tutoring students. They should be able to continue their hard work and motivation to perform outstanding in school. I can give them the necessary academic motivation and convince them that this would be the first step to personal success and a healthy future.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would allow them to realize their life goals and convince them that good grades would be the stepping stone to reach all their goals. My ability to tutor effectively would help them conquer their struggles in the school subject and give them the confidence to perform well in and outside of school.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would explain a skill or concept in different ways. Some students are visual learners, and some are better with numbers. I would be able to give them a real life example or relate it to something they are interested in.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Reading comprehension is a skill where you try to understand a passage and want to decipher the meaning. It is important to search for key words and vocabulary that suggests a writer's tone and purpose of writing. I would break down the skills needed for reading comprehension and analyze the passage with a student
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
To have a good connection and trust. The student needs to be ensured that the subject can be conquered and is not as horrible as he or she thinks it is.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would give them long term goals for a subject and convince them that those goals are reachable. It is always exciting to get good grades and ace a test!
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I am very good at making practice problems off the top of my head from my many years of experience. I would give them techniques to double check their answers. I would give the same questions before a session and after a session to see how well they retain the information.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I let them know that they can stop me at any time and feel free to speak up. I am more than happy to explain a concept multiple times and in different ways. If a student does not get it, I will not just give up and move on.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I am very, very flexible and can teach in many ways. I have taught students who have gone to top schools as well as struggling students and students with learning disorders. Every student is different, and it is my duty to know what style is best for that student.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I usually use books if I am at an official tutoring center. I would recommend a student check out the textbook. I can also pull up questions online or off the top of my head if necessary.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I would make sure that they know that they can succeed, and that the subject is not as hard as they think it is. I would start off with easier examples and build my way up to more complex ones so that they can build up their confidence. Encouragement and motivation are always essential to help out students!
