Belle
Certified Tutor
My name is Belle Jo and I have been teaching Chinese with a public school district for two years. I graduated from college with a degree in political science at 20 years old, hold a certification in Intermediate-Advanced Chinese from the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages, and received a Critical Language Scholarship from the US Department of State to study intensive advanced Mandarin in China in 2015.
Studying and teaching intensive Chinese has helped me learn how to lay down the fundamentals of a subject and build on them, what topics in a subject to focus on and why, and how to teach students using teaching styles other than lecturing. After all, thanks to my experience teaching with the public school system, I know that one size doesn't, in fact, fit all. For students to learn at their best, a teacher must be flexible and ready to adapt to their needs. Whether it be teaching a language or teaching a mathematical concept, learning should flow in a natural, logical order for every student. In this way, I strive to cater to my students' academic needs as much as possible. Having been dropped into China with only two years of Mandarin under my belt, I understand how intimidating learning can be. I want to make learning a natural, logical process for my students.
My hobbies include writing (I've been working on a novel for 10 years), audio engineering for live theatre, and building computers.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would start by getting to know them - asking them about their interests, why they wanted tutoring, and what exactly they need help with. Then I would ask them questions about their learning style and where they're at in the learning process in order to figure out how to adapt my teaching style to them. Finally, I would ask if they had any sort of plan or schedule for this particular subject (e.g. if they learn fractions in two weeks in math) so I could build lesson plans based off of that.
