From my experiences teaching at CSU, most people learn from concrete explanations and examples. But, there are a few who learn verbally and/or by consistently writing. I try to find that learning style and counter it with the proper teaching style.

Get to know my student and their learning style.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By showing them resources to use if no one can help and encouraging them to do so.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By keeping the subject exciting and showing why it is needed.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Go back to the basics.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Read with them, and encourage them to read a little each day to enhance their comprehension skills.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Being a great listener.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
My famous quote, "failure is just an opportunity to become better". Doing things the wrong way can result in an understanding of how to do things right.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
By having the student explain the material while executing the technique with no supervision.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
By having an appropriate conversation about what's troubling, distracting or difficult to the student.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
By being a great listener.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Whiteboard/markers/eraser, notebook, old notes, computer, thinking caps and subject materials.
What is your teaching philosophy?
Each one; teach one!
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
With repetitiveness!!
