Greetings! I am a former teacher (five years!) and have currently taken a break to go back to school to further my own education. I am a graduate student at the Harvard Graduate School of Education learning the fundamentals of school leadership. While I am so excited to be a student again, I already miss teaching!

I have taught math for five years and absolutely love it. My favorite is working with students who struggle in math and think they will never be successful. I love working with these students because I feel confident that I can present the material in simple, new ways that will make them feel GOOD at math in a way they may never have felt before. (It has happened in the past, I promise!)

Math is so fun to me, and math literacy is absolutely crucial to be a well functioning part of this world. I have taught math at every level between 6th and 10th grade and feel confident in my knowledge and how I can deliver it to my students.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Learning can be FUN. I believe students have fun when they feel successful and feel like they understand the material, so I do whatever I can in my power to make this happen.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would take the time to get to know the student and gage how they feel about school. I'd also spend a lot of time trying to get a feel for how they are currently doing, any strengths or weaknesses, and I'd set some goals for our time together.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I'd set a lot of short-term goals and give a lot of frequent, instant feedback!

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would break it down as much as possible and I would come up with fun visuals/real-life scenarios to bring a little more excitement to the topic. I'm also good at figuring out exactly where the misconception is happening and practicing specific spots with them until they feel ready to move on.
