Miriam
Certified Tutor
I first began tutoring during college as a volunteer at an after school program for Durham public school students in 2nd and 3rd grades. I enjoyed the experience so much that I continued working with the students on their reading, math, and science skills for four years, following them up through the 6th grade.
During college I also began working for the Duke Peer Tutoring program to tutor fellow students. I was a biology major and taking premed classes, so I tutored subjects such as organic chemistry, physics, general chemistry, and Spanish. I also volunteered with a student group that tutored adults in the Durham community that were learning English as a second language.
Each of these tutoring experiences had unique challenges and provided valuable learning opportunities. I gained familiarity working with a wide age range of students, from elementary school age to adult, as well as a wide variety of different learning styles.
Outside of tutoring, I am currently a 2nd year medical student at Johns Hopkins. In my free time, I love to run, hike, travel and cook.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Meeting students where they are.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Ask what the student likes about the subject, and what he or she finds most frustrating. Also ask what helps them most when they are studying.
