What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe there is no model that fits any one student and that getting to know that student and his or her learning process is integral to teaching him or her effectively and productively.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I'd like to ask the student what his or her expectations are for the tutoring sessions, his or her strengths and weaknesses, and what reachable and realistic goals he or she has for our time together.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Pushing the student to form his or her own opinions, think independently, and acknowledge his or her own strengths and weaknesses will help that student become an independent learner. I will be there for support and guidance but will not walk the student through every single problem so that they can use what they've learned to walk themselves through a problem.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Encouragement and support, setting small, reachable goals that we can check off when we've achieved them, and playing games that help the student learn.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would approach the concept differently from what they're used to so they can look at it in a different light. Learning games generally work very well too.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would suggest that for each passage, the student writes 2-3 words about what he or she thought each paragraph meant in the context of the story. I think this method helps students gauge the overall meaning of the story, as well as allowing them to really focus on the details of each paragraph.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I like gauging what goals the student wants to achieve during our time together, what particular aspects of the subject the student struggles with the most, and what learning style best helps them grasp difficult concepts. From there, we can focus on doing specific problems/prompts in those challenging areas, and then move on to improve all areas of the subject.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Flashcards, charts, tables, pictures, and videos.
