I believe the qualities of a great teacher include accountability, creativity, and exceptional management skills. Students' views of education are shaped by their early experiences in school. A teacher is one of the first people to develop a child's passion for knowledge. Students enjoy the learning experience when they feel their academic curiosity and well being are nurtured. It is important for a teacher to model how all aspects of life is a learning experience. I believe it is important for students to understand that learning is a lifelong journey and their perspective of learning can instill a passion for learning.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Learning is a life long process and requires a holistic approach.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Ask students who they believe they are, their goals, motivational sources, academic frustrations, and past success.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I would help a student realize past success through self-exploration and determination.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Remind the student of their end goals and inform them that failures can be necessary for success.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Ask the student to try to explain what they do understand and then present another perspective to grasp the concept.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Introduce a topic that interests the student and help them to realize they do indeed know how to comprehend it, now just apply it to read material.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Learning about the student such as learning styles and likes before starting the academic process.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would have the student teach me the concept.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Show the student the success they have had thus far in the subject. Also remind them new material is usually complicated but it seems easy after practice and mastery.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Observational and quantitative data.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
If I see the student having certain difficulties I research alternative ways to deliver the content.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Dependent on the subject, manipulatives, interest based readings, hands-on demonstrations, and videos may be used.
