Certified Tutor

I published my first newspaper article in 1986 and have spent the last 30 years as a free-lance writer, newspaper reporter and teacher. I have published many articles in print and online magazines, as well as thousands of blog posts and articles for commercial clients. I am currently employed teaching remedial English, Freshman composition and research writing.

My personal philosophy about anything is that we learn the most from our mistakes, and if you let fear keep you from attempting something, you will never get anywhere. Take chances; make mistakes and learn from them.

In addition to writing and teaching, I enjoy hand-spinning, weaving and knitting, as well as gardening and cooking. My family lives on a 20-acre mini-farm, where we raise goats, sheep, pigs and chickens.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I try to help students build confidence in their own abilities. It is only when we feel we can trust ourselves that we gain the courage to stand on our own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I like to break assignments down into smaller steps. It gives students more experience with success, and I find that feeling good about their work helps to motivate students.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

When a student has difficulty with a concept or skill I back up and review previous concepts, or break the task into smaller parts.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Don't be afraid to try. If you don't try, you'll never know what you can do.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

We would spend a little bit of time getting to know each other, exploring the student's concerns and reviewing the directions for the assignment.
