I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

What better way is there to apply knowledge than to explain to others? I enjoy giving abstract concepts substance by discussing them with others, among peers and students alike. The action is also enjoyable on a social level-- there is nothing quite like navigating new material with someone else. It's an opportunity for both of us to discover new ways to relate with what we are learning.
It's these sentiments that have made studying Chemistry at Emory University a great experience so far. It's also why I like to tutor Algebra. The subject is all about relationships, and becomes so applicable in other natural sciences. Because of it's versatility, there's a multitude of ways to connect concepts. I like to relate new material with knowledge a student already possesses by outlining these connections. I've found this method to be very effective with my little sister, as well as students at Kumon Learning Centers.
Outside of academia, I enjoy running, reading and swing dance. I'm involved with my campus American Sign Language club, as well as residence life.

What is your teaching philosophy?

To reach an understanding, it's important that a student not only knows the answer to a question, but also the relationship between the question and answer. How do the concepts relate? That's what I hope to teach.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

After names are exchanged, I think it's important to communicate both of our interests. By establishing this, and possible common ground, we open up new lines of communication for the material, through metaphors and the like.
