Anna
Certified Tutor
I am a graduate of the University of North Carolina Wilmington. I received my Bachelor of Science in Biology and will matriculate into the MD program Class of 2020 at Eastern Virginia Medical School in the fall. I began my tutoring career as a Supplemental Instruction Leader for Microbiology of Human Disease for four semesters and Chemistry 101 for two semesters while in undergrad. These are peer-facilitated group review sessions designed to help students succeed in historically difficult courses. I would meet with the students of each of these courses to review lecture materials, supplemental materials that I could provide, and review for tests. In my time as an SI leader, I learned I have a talent for presenting difficult information in an easy to understand fashion. I have a passion for helping students that are struggling in these courses, and try to present the topics they go over in a way that they can relate. With partial responsibility of a student's education in my hands, I strive to exceed the expectations of my job description and not only review material and answer questions, but I also take time to prepare supplemental materials such as charts, graphs, quizzes, and other organizational materials for their notes.

I enjoy spending time outdoors, whether that be beach activities like surfing or paddle boarding (my favorite!), finding a new bike trail, or taking my puppy on a long walk.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
During my first session with a student, I try to establish their goals and how I can help them achieve these goals. I ask questions to identify where they are struggling and work out a plan to correct any deficiencies they might have in the subject matter.
