What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that all students can learn and advance, and not every student learns in the same way. I believe that teaching is relational.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session, I would meet with a student and get to know what they want to work on, and discuss things with them so that I can understand who they are, what they know, what they want to know, and what they need to know.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would help the student by giving them study tips, test taking tips, and helping them to question texts.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would encourage students when they are discouraged. I would give prompts to help them think through problems.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would research it and look for other ways to teach it.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I teach visualization practices. I teach question asking and annotation. I teach context clues.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I think the best strategy is to be open with students. Students need to trust their teachers and feel supported.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would choose material that is interested in them. I ask probing questions. I would prompt them to think through material.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would ask comprehension questions. I would make sure that the student understands the vocabulary.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would use positive enforcement.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I ask questions of students and parents. I try to understand how a student thinks in order to evaluate their individual needs.
