I am a current undergraduate student at California State University, Long Beach, and studying civil engineering with a minor in applied mathematics. I have been tutoring all my life, as I grew up I was just helping my classmates and family members who needed help. When I started college, I got a job on campus as a tutor for student athletes in math. As of now, I tutor almost any math subject out there and I love all of them. I like to find out why the students having difficulties and then go from there. In most cases, I find presenting the material in a different way helps many students because they just do not understand the way the teacher is trying to. Also in most classes, I have come to realize the teachers skip steps the students should know, but for me I like to go through all the steps to make sure they do not forget how to do something. Outside of school, I like to go to the beach, just starting to learn how to surf, and I love snowboarding in the winter.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My philosophy is that the students need to understand the basics before they can really understand the material.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Get to know the student, understand the problems they are having, and find out what type of learner they are.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By providing the necessary tools for them to succeed and watch them use them on their own, while helping them on their way.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By making them think about what they want in life and how they are going to get it.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Keep practicing that skill or try developing a new way to think about the certain concept.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
By helping them break down the reading into smaller digestible pieces.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
It is usually helpful to find out why they are struggling in the first place, not just what they are struggling with.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
By providing real world examples of why it is necessary and how it will help them in the future.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Giving them practice questions after we have gone over it a few times.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
By always complimenting them on their effort and by being nice and helpful.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
By going through what they say they need help with and starting from there.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Depending on how they learn or how they want to be taught, we can see what works best for them.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Typically just paper, pencils, and a workbook.
