My formal and informal teaching experiences over the past ten years have given me a variety of opportunities to help young children, adults, and my peers. Tutors not only need to be knowledgeable of the content, but it is more important that s/he can connect to the students. The benefit of teaching English Language Learners has enabled me to creatively find ways to connect with my students. These ways could range from role-playing the scenes of a difficult text to making up a song or game to learn the steps to problem-solving. Often times, students cannot articulate their learning goals or needs and it is up to the teacher to guide the students, not just simply giving them the answer. The teacher has to immediately observe, learn and adapt to the learning styles of the students. Making this student- teacher connection is my priority as an educator and should be one of the earliest steps taken by any teacher or tutor. However, I recognize not every teacher-student relationship will be a success; therefore, my irrepressible desire to reach any and all types of students hopefully encourages them to develop this same resiliency within themselves.
