Catherine: Lauderhill tutor
Certified Tutor
I have been teaching for nearly 20 years in a wide breadth of subjects and areas. I am a licensed special education teacher and have experience working with adult students as well. I am passionate about history and literature, sociology, anthropology and helping students be successful. Reading and cooking are my most frequent hobbies, but I enjoy writing as well. I am proud to be a contributor to the Story Share project which works to create engaging books for older kids and adults who read at a lower literacy level.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that students who are held to high standards accomplish more. Many students who struggle with work are discouraged and feel inadequate; it is my job to help them overcome that.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
As tutoring can be a fairly close relationship, I would hope to find out more about the student specifically, what motivates them and excites them. I would of course want to see where they were at with their subject matter too!
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
The scaffolding model is very useful in this. 1. Demonstrate 2. Assist 3. Independent.
