Lauren

Certified Tutor

I have been a tutor since 4th grade. I have experience tutoring all levels of mathematics from middle school through college classes. I also have experience tutoring both special education and gifted students.

I graduated from Rider University in 2014 with a degree in secondary education and mathematics. I also earned a technology certificate.

It is my belief that tutoring needs to be an enjoyable experience for everyone involved so that the most information can be retained during the sessions. I always try my best to alter the session to fit the specific needs of the individual. For this reason no two sessions are ever truly the same.

I hope that I can have the opportunity to help improve mathematical understanding and reasoning.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session, I would discuss what the student's goals were for tutoring. I would ensure that we were on the same page as to what should be covered. I would also ask the student to briefly explain what they are currently learning and what exactly is giving them trouble.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I help students become independent learners by asking them multiple questions throughout the session. I find that the more the student has to explain themselves the more comfortable they become with the material.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, I would have the student try their best to explain to me what portion of the skill or concept was giving them the most trouble. I would then try to come up with a trick or mnemonic device to try to help the student understand the concept. If they were still having difficulty, I would practice with them and attempt the problem multiple different ways.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that learning needs to be fun and enjoyable for students to truly want to learn. They also need to know why they are learning what they are learning.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Confidence in a subject is built over time by showing the student that they are capable of doing so much more than they believe. I build confidence by keeping track of how the student performs and making sure they know what they are capable of. I also like to have the students "teach" me how to do a problem so they can really see how well they understand the material.
