I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I graduated from Harvard in 2008, where I concentrated in Classics (Greek and Latin Language and Literature) with a Secondary Field in Dramatic Arts. After my senior year, I was awarded the Classics Department's Segal Fellowship for Travel and Research. I received my MA in Advanced Theatre Practice from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (University of London) in 2013 and previously completed the One Year Professional Acting course at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in England.

I founded an international theater company called The Sun Apparatus with three other women in 2013. Since then, most of my non-tutoring hours are spent performing, rehearsing, directing, and producing for the company. We were shortlisted for the Scottish Daily Mail Drama Award in 2014 and will be taking our newest work, The ME, to the Edinburgh Festival this summer. I also work at Time In Children's Arts Initiative, a program that teaches opera appreciation and fine art to Pre-K through Fourth Grade public school children from Harlem and the Bronx.

I enjoy working with students to confront the challenges of a subject and then watching as the challenges begin to slip away and what was previously frustrating and incomprehensible to the students becomes a subject that they now enjoy learning about and studying. I believe I am a good tutor and teacher because I am patient, encouraging, and have good communication and classroom management skills. I do not get frustrated if my students do not understand something right away; instead, I look for an alternative way to explain whatever is confusing to my students.

My goal is not simply to help my students improve their grades, but rather to teach reliable study skills, encourage interest in the subject, and, most importantly, instill a passion for learning.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I enjoy working with students to confront the challenges of a subject and then watching as the challenges begin to slip away, and what was previously frustrating and incomprehensible to the students becomes a subject that they now enjoy learning about and studying. I believe I am a good tutor and teacher because I am patient, encouraging, and have good communication skills. I do not get frustrated if a student does not understand something right away; instead, I look for an alternative way to explain what my student does not understand. Even if a student is not the most focused initially, I remain positive and encouraging until we eventually learn together how to make this subject interesting for the student.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session with a student, we will talk through and note down what the student's goals are and what the timeframe is for completing these goals. We will also go through whatever study guides or other materials the student has and determine whether those materials are sufficient, or if we need to look for some more (online study guides or problem sets, test prep books, textbooks, etc.). Finally, I will ask if the student would like to receive homework from me, or if s/he would prefer all the work to be done during the tutoring sessions. Then, we'll get to work!
