I am a great tutor because I have an extensive background knowledge of the subject material and I understand that teaching at its essence is a performance art. The teacher must entertain and engage the student as well as communicate the required information. I accomplish this with discussions of useful relationships and background material. Useful relationships include shortcuts between quantities and concepts, and most importantly the use of dimensional analysis to verify test answers. Background material such as the history of science and mathematics is quite effective at not only making the material more interesting but at clarifying concepts and tying them together. The story of what a scientist was trying to accomplish when creating a theory can make the difference between accurately comprehending a theory and therefore its limitations or only memorizing a formula for plug and chug strategies. Of course in test taking, there is nothing wrong with plug and chug approaches except in cases where there are more than one formula that can apply and a deeper understanding is required. I have an extensive knowledge of scientific and mathematical history because one of my hobbies is reading about the history of philosophy and science from Aristotle's Science that later became the basis for the Ptolemaic Universe through Newtonian Physics, Quantum Physics, and Relativity to the modern era's String Theory and Loop Quantum Gravity. I find the historical approach is the only way to really understand physics but seeing how one discovery led to another in the other sciences is fascinating as well.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My philosophy is to stress an understanding of the material as well as working on exercising the student’s ability to solve problems. An understanding of the material is the only thing that will suffice when there is more than one method to solve a problem and the methods give different answers.
