I am somewhat of a Jill of all trades individual, with a background in a wide variety of areas. I find that this helps me support students and make connections beyond one content area. I enjoy working with students because they are our future and I hope to help them learn to evaluate their choices, and make well informed decisions, rather than hastily made ones. I believe that every action has an equal and opposite reaction, which also applies to decisions. We all have to live with our choices, for good or for bad. I hope that I can help support students to accept whatever may come their way. I also choose to work within boundaries, allowing students freedom to work through obstacles in their own way, as they learn best when they are independent, but still in a semistructured environment. My background includes graduating college with honors, as well as a diverse background in both public and private education, at all levels, from elementary education to doctoral candidates.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would get to know their interests and what motivates them. After that, we would do some assessments to figure out what direction is best to go.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I let them do the work by asking lots of questions and working through problems with them. I will provide different options as they work so they know there are different strategies from which to pick.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
It depends on the student. Sometimes wiggle breaks are part of working together, or sticker charts toward a larger prize. Working on skills with them through the lens of interests is also important.
