What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that each student needs to be taught in their own way. My goal is to teach each student in the way that they feel most comfortable to learn the subject at hand.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Ask them what the problem is and see how much they understand of the problem to gauge where they are at.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

The best way is to teach them the core fundamentals of the subject. This allows them to build upon that and lets them solve problems that should arise.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would make a student stay motivated by engaging them while teaching or solving problems. Allowing for interaction between student and teacher is a great way to keep the student involved and motivated.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would get to the most basic form of the concept or skill and help them to understand that. That way we can advance and eventually teach that skill or concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Reading comprehension comes from understanding the meaning of words and the different ways they can be used. So for that student I would explain each word and show how the words work together.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I find that explaining the problem in simpler terms, not using any jargon, and then building up to the harder problems is the best way.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would show them the great ways to use their subject. This allows them to have another way to understand the topic as well as an interesting motive to keep learning.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would have the student solve a problem that is one notch higher than the level of problems I have taught. This shows the student has understood the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

This is done through repetitive problems and comes from doing exercises numerous times.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student’s needs by what they should know and what they do know and then helping them understand everything in between completely.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Many students just need sheer number of problems to get a topic under their wing. Others might just need an analogy or another way of viewing the information that they can understand.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

My main materials are a calculator, paper and a pen/pencil.
