Mariam

Certified Tutor

I graduated from Columbia College at Columbia University, class of 2014, with a dual degree in Biology and Russian Literature. During my time at Columbia, I participated in "Peer Health Exchange", a student run organization where we taught local high schoolers about Health & Wellness. Although my interests lie with mathematics, biology and chemistry, I am also well versed in literature and college standardized tests like the ACT and MCAT. I always enjoy conquering a new subject and I hope to pass on that passion to whomever I teach!

I was raised in a family that truly believes that education is the most important tool in one's life. As such, I am in the process of applying to medical school for the class of 2020. When I am not working or studying, I enjoy photography, cooking, exploring New York and the rest of the world!

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that the best teachers are understanding of their students' needs and learning styles. I like to get a sense of how my students learn best, and then tailor my teaching style to their needs. I like to create visual guides and use videos and other tools to help students conquer a concept that they are struggling with.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session, it is important to get to know a student, identify their current needs, and let them know how I hope to help them master the concepts of interest.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

It is important to allow your students to try to figure things out on their own, step by step. I hope to be there to help nudge them in the right direction when they may be stuck on a concept, but not just doing everything for them. It is also important to leave them with some questions or ideas that they can work on until the next tutoring session.
