Elizabeth: Lindenhurst tutor

Certified Tutor

I am 22 years old. I graduated from Sacramento State in the fall of 2015 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. While at Sacramento State, I took multiple calculus courses including differential equations. Also I coached high school volleyball for 3 years at my former high school in Elk Grove. I decided to start tutoring after graduating college so I could share my knowledge with many other students to help them succeed in school. Tutoring for me is comparable to engineering. I love both because I love to solve problems. I hope to teach students to be unafraid of solving problems as well. I tutor Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Trigonometry and Calculus. My favorite subject to tutor is Algebra 1. I like Algebra 1 because that is the beginning of solving equations and I believe that a solid understanding of Algebra 1 is very important for students. My tutoring style is patient and enthusiastic. I enjoy math and I want my students to enjoy it too! My teaching philosophy is you cannot build without tools. In math you need to add every tool to your toolbox that you can because math is always a cumulative subject. Outside of academia I enjoy being around friends and family. I also enjoy most outdoor activities such as running, yoga, hiking, biking, and rowing.

What is your teaching philosophy?

You cannot build without any tools.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I begin with answering any direct questions they might have. After an initial evaluation of their skill sets, I try to fill in any blanks of information I feel they may be missing.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I try to reinforce all possible ways to solve problems so they understand the whole concept instead of just how to solve one specific problem.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would greatly encourage students every step of the way and acknowledge every time they are successful.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will explain the concept in as many different ways as needed because all students learn differently.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would have the student summarize and analyze the material and ask them many questions to try to lead them to the right answer.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I always try to be patient, enthusiastic, and have a happy demeanor. If students see that I am not frustrated then they are typically less frustrated themselves.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Every time they answer a question correctly, I remind them of the progress that they have made. Or I would try to find examples of situations in real life that they would need to use the subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would turn the tables and ask the student to explain to me how to solve the problem.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would constantly remind them about the progress that they have made and I would always be excited about it.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I really try to answer every question they have as thoroughly as possible, and I also try to pay attention to the student’s body language and reactions to ensure that they actually understand a topic like they say they do.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I analyze their learning style and ask them how they learn best.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I often use calculators, graphs, any objects that can help a student visually see the problem.
