Leslie: Santa Fe tutor
Certified Tutor
I have a Master's degree in Applied Behavioral Sciences with an emphasis in systems counseling from
Bastyr University, and a bachelor's degree in German from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. I have an
extensive writing background, having worked as a Technical Writer for 10 years, and having written several
post-graduate academic papers on various aspects of counseling and psychology. While I enjoy helping
kids with reading, writing, math, and homework support in elementary and middle school classrooms, what I love most is working collaboratively with kids to help them become better writers. I have found that kids of all ages have such amazing thoughts and ideas that often go unnoticed in their writing because they
struggle with how to put words on paper. To learn to write well requires ongoing, detailed feedback from teachers who often have a student load of over 100 kids and simply don't have the time to provide such feedback. That is where I can help. I can work with you on an ongoing basis, giving you constructive feedback and useful suggestions to help you express your thoughts in an effective and impact-full manner, while using proper writing conventions, grammar, and punctuation. Whether you need to write a literary analysis for English, a research paper for Psychology, or a college entrance essay, I will happily work with you to hone your writing style and learn proper writing conventions.
I'm also available to tutor Speech and Debate, Intro to Psychology, beginning and intermediate German, and English Literature and Composition classes.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is that students learn best when they can find or come up with answers to problems on their own. I see my role as a coach to help them do just that. I like to guide by asking questions, pointing out possible resources, and having back and forth conversations that inspire critical thinking about the topic at hand. When it comes to writing, I like to share some general writing conventions and then give feedback during the writing process, with the end goal of helping students develop their own style. Like my students, I don't think I have, or expect myself to know all the answers. Part of the fun of the tutor/student relationship is exploring topics and finding answers together in preparation for an exam or a term paper.
