Brittney
Certified Tutor
I am a graduate of the University of North Carolina Wilmington. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and English before graduating with my Masters degree in English in May of 2015. I have worked with learners of all ages from many different areas including: high school students in South Korea, elementary to adult students in India, and I currently teach college freshmen at my alma mater. I love working on writing with students of every age; there is something special about crafting a perfect sentence that leads to a stellar paper. I believe that if you expect a lot out of students and learners, then they will rise to the occasion with the right support. When I’m not tutoring or teaching, I enjoy spending time playing with my dog or planning my next big adventure abroad.

What is your teaching philosophy?
First, I believe that all students have the capacity to learn. Tutoring should be a joint process between the tutor and learner, with both having equal importance in the learning process.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
My first session with a student will be used to get to know one another and set specific goals for the student. Working through these two things early on allow for a positive ongoing experience.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Teaching study skills and transferrable skills is the key to creating independent learners. It is also important that I teach the value of learning in itself, making it interesting and fun!
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Having a great one-on-one relationship is the first step to keeping students motivated to learn. I also attempt to know my students on an individual basis so that I know what motivates them. At times, students may be most motivated by taking a quick break in order to clear their heads and regroup.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
If a student is having difficulty with a skill, I will break it down into smaller, more manageable parts. Going through the steps, with clear and understandable examples will help the student to grapple with difficult/abstract ideas in a way that can be easily be tackled.
