What is your teaching philosophy?

Help walk the student through their problems instead of just showing them how to solve them.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introduce myself, ask exactly what they need help with and see what they already know.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

See what they know about a subject and walk them through how to apply the knowledge to solve problems, rather than have them watch me solve problems.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Not trying to force/rush them to understand the concepts, but let them know that they will have to work to get better.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Backtrack to see what earlier concepts that can help tie in with the difficult concept, and allow them to make the proper connections needed to understand the concept

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

If it's just problems with understanding the meaning of words, help them with their vocabulary.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Not forcing anything, have them write/type down everything they think might be helpful for the problem, remind them if there's anything they're forgetting/don't know, watch/listen to how they solve the problem and make adjustments from there.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I feel as they learn more about subjects they're struggling in, they'll start enjoying the subject more.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Allow them to solve problems, while I watch and question them along the way.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Not rushing them, and complimenting them as they start improving their skills.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Watching how they solve problems without any help.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Depending on how well they can problem solve on their own, I'll know how much I'll need to help them.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The online interface, a pen, notebook and a calculator.
