Over the past three decades I have gained a concrete mathematics teaching experience in several countries all over the globe. I was teaching high school students mathematics for five hours a week, and I got my bachelors in Science and Education in 1989 to be ready to join one of the public schools as a middle school math teacher in Egypt.
In 1991, I moved to work at the experimental language schools using the English language as a medium until 1995. I gained exposure to modern methodology in teaching mathematics, new skills and practical tools of this field while attending an in-service training in teaching mathematics in Heriot Watt University (Moray House Institute) in Edinburgh- Scotland in 1995.
From 1996 to 2000 I worked at various private schools as a high school math teacher in Egypt, from 2001 to 2007 I was appointed by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign affairs (The Egyptian Fund for Technical Support with Africa) to work as an expert in teaching mathematics in Chad. What is your teaching philosophy?
Teaching Philosophy I am a proponent of a learner focused communicative mathematics teaching approach. I believe that as a teacher I should seek to motivate students and help them gain more interest in the subject matter I am teaching. I want my students to enjoy and feel comfortable learning in my classroom. At the same time, I also expect my students to work hard and actively participate in my lessons. Students who do not meet this requirement may be required to repeat lessons or courses. I also believe in focusing on understanding over learning by heart and creative analysis as opposed to routine imitation. Finally, I believe it is important as a teacher to show humility, compassion and genuine care for my students and to respect them as individuals. I understand that my responsibility is not just to teach my students mathematics, but also to teach them from a holistic perspective how to have a meaningful and successful life.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a typical first session with a student I would like to spend some time getting to know a brief about his/ her academic history, long and short goals, weak and strong points, hobbies and likes/ dislikes.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By building up his/ her self-confidence, encouraging the student to ask questions, to think and investigate each step, to try everything and to make it clear to everyone that no pains means no gains, and that the root of education is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Encouraging, listening, and by proper communication.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Being patient and persistent is a vital key. Never give up. When there is a will there is a way. Use a different approach. Take your time. We learn from our mistakes more than we learn from our success.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Go slowly but surely. Learn more vocabulary.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Be friendly and open.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Easy is good; encouraging is essential.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
More practice, contentious assessment.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Practice makes perfect.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
A legitimate relevant conversation, and continuous assessments.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Each student has a different pace of work, techniques, terminology, personality, and socio-cultural background, and based on these variances and factors, I can modify and adapt my tutoring.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Everything, like books, printouts, the Internet, and my PC.
