Certified Tutor

I have a passion for math! Math is one of the most challenging subjects for the majority of students. As a student myself, I struggled with math. It wasn't until my Freshman year of college that I truly developed my passion. I had the best teacher who could explain any concept - this is what I strive to be for my clients! I believe anyone can learn with the right motivation and the right person explaining to them!I think I'm a great tutor because I am able to relate mathematical concepts to the real world making them more concrete and understandable. I also have experience and ability to break down complex mathematical concepts into simpler and more achievable ideas. I have been tutoring students since my junior year of high school and loved it so much that I decided to become a teacher. My personal circumstances have taken me out of the classroom, but my desire to help young people is still in the forefront of my mind.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that everyone can learn. It doesn't matter where you come from, what your background is, how your brain works - you can learn! We just need to find the right approach. Once we find the way you learn best, you will not be able to stop and you will LOVE it!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

A typical first session would be about getting to know the client as well as beginning their work. I would like to start out by observing how a student learns and watch as the student works. That way I can address any misconceptions and adjust my teaching style to their learning style.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Students become independent learners by increasing their confidence. As time goes on learning a certain topic, the tutor should be less and less involved. I would start out showing the student how to do a problem, explaining each step as I go. Then I would ask the student to do the problem offering the same step-by-step guidance. Then I would ask the student to try to complete it with less guidance or no guidance at all. Finally, I would ask the student to complete some problems without my help to ensure they have mastered the skill independently!

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Motivation is key in a more difficult subject like math. My students would benefit greatly from guidance and encouragement at each step of their process. I would ensure students were able to take a break when needed, so they do not burn out. I would also push my students so they know there is always room for improvement. Either way, my students would receive constant feedback to help keep them focused and motivated!
