Braxton

Certified Tutor

I've been a tutor for much of my life, starting with my younger sisters and progressing to a college level. I tutored through 21st Century Scholars during my time at IU for linear algebra, calculus, and finite mathematics classes. I graduated from Indiana University - Bloomington with a Bachelor's of Arts in Political Science, minor in Mathematics, in December 2011. I'm currently a Process Assistant at an Amazon warehouse, which is like an assistant manager. My job is interesting, active, and varied, but I missed tutoring and want to make math and other subjects as easy as possible to approach and grasp for students. With the right time and a commitment to tailoring a tutoring style for the person being assisted, any student can pass their classes and retain lifelong knowledge and experience. I'm looking forward to working with you!

What is your teaching philosophy?

Any student can learn a subject with the right time investment and the right style of teaching.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would introduce myself to the student and have a brief conversation to engage them and make them feel comfortable.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would help the student realize the importance of success in math in their own life, which may be different depending on the goals and personality student.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would address the concept in several different ways, geometrically and visually, as well as conceptually, in order to find which explanation is easiest to understand.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I explain concepts in different ways that help students comprehend topics from new perspectives.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I feel motivated and friendly. Direct engagement with the material is the most effective technique for learning.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would have them focus on their strengths within the subject and help them grow off of their previous knowledge.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would engage them with practice problems and an end-of-chapter review.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would remind them of their strengths and abilities rather than focusing on negatives.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I would evaluate a student's needs based upon their current grades, past education, and personal goals.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I engage students with concepts in varied formats, including visual aids, hypothetical situations, and real-life examples.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

It depends on the material, but paper and pencil are a minimum, along with integrated use of online tools.
