I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I'd like to start by saying that my love for language, writing, and composition started when I moved to Florence, Italy, with my family at seven years old. The home I knew as a child was Washington, DC, and I distinctly remember the intense longing I had to stay in America when my parents told me we'd be moving. I didn't understand until later that culture shock of moving to another country was exactly what they wanted for my siblings and I to experience. After living in Italy and moving back to DC, my perspective on the world changed for the better and I found myself constantly doing everything in my power to travel, learn different languages, and use my writing and reading skills to expand my horizons. After living in Spain in my Junior year of High School and again before attending college, I realized I really love teaching others about language, writing, and history while I learned more about those subjects myself. I love working in a classroom setting once I was hired at Monte Vista Elementary School, though I am a strong believer in tutoring around my own school schedule so i am able to be a student as well as a teacher. I find it to be very rewarding to both teach an area of expertise that I am interested in myself as well as to learn about each student's specific style of retaining information. I've also come to realize is that my students teach me just as much as I teach them.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that it is necessary for the teacher to create a comfortable environment for the student to thrive in. When the teacher is able to build a relationship with the student and find a manner in which the student can relate to the subject in his/her real life, the material leaves the session and enters the real world.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introduce ourselves and introduce some of the subject's basic ideas in a fun and relaxed way so the student becomes familiarized with the material but also enjoys the session.
