Certified Tutor

My goal as a tutor is to ensure that every one of my students learns the proper methods and gains the understanding to tackle their academic problems. I will work with an individual for however long it takes them to master a subject. I value the importance of practice when it comes to academics. The grades students receive are based on the practice time put in by the student, so it is necessary to put in the practice time until a concept is mastered. No question in any subject should be seen as impossible to tackle - with the proper learning tools and tips/tricks that I provide to my students, I'm confident they can take on a problem of any difficulty level.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Be patient with the ones you teach and help; everyone learns at their own pace.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Speak to the student and get to understand what aspects of learning they struggle with most often.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Give them tools to take on the standard problem and have them utilize them when they are on their own studying and/or in the classroom.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Do not cram when learning; space out chapters and concepts of a subject over time in order to keep interest and focus. Cramming will lead to very little retention and little interest for motivation in the long run.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Break the problem down into smaller steps and simplify the skill as a whole, which makes the concept less intimidating.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Read the passages slowly and underline/highlight key words or themes present.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Make the problems interesting, more fun. Re-word problems so that it keeps the student's focus but maintains the same concepts they need to learn.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Go over questions that the student got wrong in past exams, and help them understand which specific mathematical concept they need to improve in to excel in future examinations.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Help them understand that many students go through difficulties in Mathematics; they are not alone.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Watch them keenly on how they tackle a standard test question, and pinpoint at which part they diverted away from the main route of successful answering the question.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

By looking at past assessment exams.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Take time to understand their personality, and their likes and dislikes, so I can mold math questions in a way where the student can have more interest and motivation for the material.
