John
Certified Tutor
I'm a natural and empathetic tutor because I have struggled with learning disabilities and ADHD. The difficulties that students face are difficulties that I too once dealt with. The challenges I've faced have made me a lifelong learner. It's this same passion that I hope to instill in my students.
My style is a bit like a personal trainer. I try to figure out where my student is at the moment, and quickly adapt my plans to help them succeed. Each person is different. I like re-teach (or teach) myself whatever my student is learning. This study is fun for me, and helps me better understand the learning dynamic of each topic or subject. Also, I believe fun lessons are strong lessons, and I like to use technologies such as Khan Academy and Minecraft, in addition to creative writing activities, in order to animate the learning process.
Finally, I have a penchant for folklore and mythology. If possible, I like to work it into my lessons. Strong stories build wisdom and understanding, and have been the hallmark of tutoring for a very long time.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy stems from my work as a personal trainer at the gym. I watch my students closely and empathize with their needs, tailoring my instruction in the moment. I also believe that clearly communicating my expectations and the parameters of an assignment upfront keeps me and my students both happy and productive.
