William: Alexandria tutor
Certified Tutor
I create an environment where students feel safe and at ease, a place where they do not have to worry about how they are perceived, and where it is good to make mistakes. I instill ethical and moral behavior and teach them tolerance of others. I also instill a love for learning based on rational and critical thinking. I teach them in a way to highlight problem solving and real life situations. I provide a challenging learning environment that is child-centered, well balanced, and aims to develop the "Whole Child" to the fullness of his or her potential. I seek to ensure that each child develops the appropriate knowledge, skills, and awareness necessary in preparation for future challenges. I seek to ensure that cultural diversity of our community and the needs of our global society are both understood and addressed.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that every student has the potential to be successful and my goal is to provide them with the confidence and tools to do so.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Get to know one another. Give the student some of my personal background that they can relate to and find interesting (e.g. I play in a band with Johnny Depp.)
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By building their self-confidence. If they know they can do, they will do it.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By giving them positive reinforcement and encouraging them to be the best they can be.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Re-model the concept and if that doesn't help, find a different teaching method or approach.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would discuss prior knowledge about the topic and introduce new vocabulary. Then, have the student retell a chunk read in their own words.
