I attained my Bachelor of Arts in English at UNC Wilmington this past spring. I have a bounty of experience working with students, with a colorful background including ski instruction and lifeguarding. I tutor in all things English, from literature and writing to essay writing and revisions. My teaching embodies a simple motto: Motivation is 90% of any goal, whether self-betterment in the short or long term. By simply taking the initiative to ask something new of yourself, you ensure the inevitable realization of a greater potential. Outside of English I enjoy skiing, snowboarding, surfing, weightlifting, and experiencing new places and ways of thinking.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Learning is not a straightforward process, but it is an achievable resolution. One just has to deal with each new setback as another journey meant to be accomplished.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Find out what a student wants to learn, not just what they feel they need to learn. The first session should highlight pertinent problems, but also highlight a greater desire for learning.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By having students answer any question that they already have the knowledge and ability to answer.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Motivation is maintained by always illustrating the successes achieved while moving towards the completion of a larger goal.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would first understand where the difficulty is primarily stemming from, whether from a specific piece or a general whole. Then, I would break down the skill or concept into what the student already understands or could be taught more effectively, and use that foundation to build towards a solution.
