What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would get a feel for a student's learning style, their instructor's expectations of the student, and why they have sought outside help.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By identifying their learning style and pointing them towards alternative resources. Also, by teaching them to find something in the material to love regardless of the subject.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By POSITIVE WORDS and ENCOURAGEMENT!

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try an alternative route.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would tell them to find key points within the story. I was taught a mnemonic, PQRST, and I would see how they fair with that and if any additional help was needed.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would connect the topic back to something they are interested in.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would use general questions that are open-ended to make sure they have a full comprehension of the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I've found that immediately giving a student really softball questions boosts their confidence and opens them up to receive more in-depth learning.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

When I first meet a student, I ask them how the class is going so far, what their concerns are, and what their teacher's expectations are. That way, I can establish a goal for the end of a tutoring session.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I'll usually use a pen and paper. I'm very good at analogies and taking a broad topic and simplifying it.
