Certified Tutor

I'm dedicated to making sure that my students understand all things reading, comprehension, and English related. I'm a music obsessive working in editorial that also loves to teach English. I'm here to help anyway I can. I went to Arizona State University and graduated with a BA in English and a concentration in Music Theory. I've tutored a lot of friends, family, and a few younger kids in my life, and have always loved working one on one with students. I like working with English and reading comprehension the most because it's where my skills really thrive.

I like to listen and write about music. I'm a huge Shakespeare addict, and I love watching anime. I'm a very analytical person, so anything I can really sink my teeth into and learn more about, I'm down for! I also love Space. I love learning about Space, and if I wasn't so bad at math, I would probably have tried to work in Astrophysics!

What is your teaching philosophy?

It depends on the student! I teach in the way they learn best!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I like to get to know them and their likes, interests, and hobbies! I also like to see where they're struggling so I can apply what they're learning to their personal life.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

It's really just about getting them interested in what they're currently learning!

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Honestly, every student is different. There are different ways to motivate different people.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to apply it to them personally and explain my own understanding of it as well. A lot of times, people are more confused by the terminology than the actual concept!

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I teach them to skim before reading! Always find the biggest points of the article in your skimming, and then go back to the details. It helps to understand the overall message of what you're reading!

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Patience! Patience is key because we're getting to know how the other works!

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Again, it depends on the student! Just feeling them out and seeing what makes them excited, and applying it to that subject!

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would definitely quiz them and have them do something on their own without being able to ask me questions!

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By reminding them that a lot of people struggle learning certain things. (Maybe even sharing a story or two of my own!)

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By allowing them to work on something, and observing the parts that they struggle more in!

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

However necessary! That's a vague answer, but it depends on the person!

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Depends! I like to use graphs, charts, lists, and outlines. I also like to utilize free writing!
