I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Go over the concepts that are making them struggle. Work through different methods to help them better understand.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Finding out what the student enjoys and relating it to what they struggle with. Finding out exactly what is troubling them.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Praise!!! Letting them play with manipulatives or candy. The biggest compliment to a student is telling them they are correct and/or doing a great job.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

After showing the student what to do, I have the student show me how to do it without my assistance.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Understanding their weaknesses and improving those areas. It will automatically improve their confidence. I then will give them my praise as well!

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By getting an understanding of what they do understand and what they do not understand. Also, by what type of learner that student is.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By understanding how that student learns. Then, make lesson plans according to the student's needs.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a devoted and caring tutor to help grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, and socially.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would get to know the student. I would find out what they enjoy. What they struggle in. What type of learning style they have. How tutoring can help the student succeed personally. Also, what they already know about the subject being tutored.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would show the student steps to becoming independent. We then would go over each step. I would gradually wean the student off of my help, and then they would be doing it on their own.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Figure out their learning style (from the first session). Then help the student according to their learning style.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

It all depends on the student. I enjoy using manipulatives and hands-on. If the student is more of an audio type of learner, I would read the materials to them, etc.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would remind them of their goals (set from the first session). Then, I would try to find more interesting ways for the student to learn the materials. Hopefully, they will not realize they are learning, and just enjoy the time they are having (while secretly learning)!
