Certified Tutor

I'm a former high school English teacher and college counselor from Chicago enrolled at a graduate writing program at the University of Minnesota. I most love helping students discover their power and voice through college essays and projects for their literature courses, but I also love helping students grow in their reading skills and other classes.

I believe that every learner has the ability to grow if a good teacher or tutor pushes him or her along the way. I try to do that through first getting to know the student and then empowering him or her through modeling and questioning to get to core understanding. I like to also use humor and a lot of patience.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I like discovery-based learning (with occasional modeling) in order to help students understand their own inherent capabilities. Ask questions before explaining! :)

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

1) Get to know the student's interests and what motivates him or her. 2) Survey the student on his or her own strengths and weaknesses. 3) Set a series of goals for our sessions together.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By giving him or her "appropriate" and leveled homework outside of class (stuff inline with the work they are doing in school). When we meet, going over the work, asking questioning and pointing out important sections of misunderstanding, and then coaching the student to solve those with the tools he or she has on hand.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Find out what he or she believes in, loves, and motivates him or her! This might be careers, parents, or hobbies. If I can connect a student's learning to something he or she is passionate about, he or she will learn it much quicker, and with more heart.
