Currently I am working towards obtaining my bachelors in Communicative Disorders & will continue working towards becoming a Speech Pathologist.

I have been apart of the education system and helping students reach their educational goals for about five years now. I have worked with Elementary School children, Middle School, and even tutored colleagues of mine. I am currently a Special Ed Assistant working with children with Autism. I have worked with children in small groups helping them improve their reading and comprehension skills. Working with multiple students at once helped me realize the different ways students learn. Patience is what helps me make sure that my students reaches their educational goals at their own pace. I believe every tutor must be very patient because everybody learns in their own way.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Teach according to the student needs and learning style. The best way to teach a student is to make them feel like the material is coming naturally, and you must make a student feel comfortable with the subject.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student - what they like and don't like when it comes to learning. Find out the ways they would like their teacher to lecture.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

A student can become an independent learner once he/she feels comfortable with they way they learn. Once they see a pattern in learning, they will become an independent learner.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

To keep a student motivated is to show them their progress no matter the difference and be excited about their progress. Students love to know when someone appreciates how hard they've been working at accomplishing a goal.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will find different approaches to the concept and keep showing different examples so they could understand the concept through their understanding.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I ask questions about the story we're reading. It all starts at the smallest detail, from asking what color shirt a character is wearing from the picture to what words the author used to express a feeling. The more questions being asked, the more the student will open up and try to grasp as many details from the reading as they can.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I found that getting to know the student is the most successful strategy. It's similar to using money as an example to teaching math. You have to use something a student is comfortable with to use as an example.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

In order for a student to get engaged, they first have to be intrigued. You have to show a student that it's more than just a struggle, and it could be fun to learn. Also, the tutor has to be excited to teach so the student has an energy to follow.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

There're many quizzes you can give a student that could show that they know the material. Also, you can have the student talk to you freely about the material. If they can talk about the concept in their own words, they have understood the material so well that they feel comfortable speaking about the material freely.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

You must applaud them for the accomplishments along the way. Give them time to do an assignment independently so they can start to learn how to solve a problem on their own.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Assessments and observations.
