I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

Not many people can say that they have a view of another country from their back yard, but I can! Being born and raised in El Paso, Texas, many cultural doors were opened for me at a young age. I grew up with a love for enchiladas, chilaquiles, horchata and Spanish. I have been speaking Spanish since I learned how to speak. I took bilingual classes all through my elementary and middle school years and took advanced Spanish classes in high school. I now aspire to share my knowledge and love for the language with others. I look for fun and creative ways to help my students internalize the language. There are so many ways to practice a foreign language and I would love to share my special techniques with you! Being bilingual has enriched my life in so many ways. I hope that with my help, this beautiful language opens doors in the future for you as well!

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that everything becomes easier with practice. You can apply that to everything in life, from learning a new language to learning how to ride a bike. The more you practice, the easier it gets! The easier it gets, the more you love it!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

At my first session with a student, I will probably ask them some questions to get to know their learning style. Once I know how they prefer to learn, I can personalize my lessons and techniques to help them.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teaching students fun tips and tricks to practice and learn outside of a tutoring lesson will help them become an independent learner. There are several exercises students can do in their everyday life to keep learning and mastering a subject.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By being encouraging! Positivity goes a long way!

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

A great way to get a student engaged and excited about a subject is by finding out what interests the student. What do they like? What kind of music and tv shows do they follow? Knowing simple, but personal things about a student will help me find ways to get them excited about what I'm teaching.
