I am a senior at the University of Michigan majoring in Biology and on the predental track. I have been teaching middle school and high school students for four years in the suburbs of Illinois, and I was a volunteer English peer tutor in my high school. I tutored Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, SAT, English, Biology, Spanish, and a wide variety of school subjects. I enjoy teaching all types of Math, English, and SAT the most. I also love editing and reading essays. As a kid, I loved writing. It was my way of putting my most genuine self out to the world, and I want to be able to help others do the same. Furthermore, I would love to help students struggling in STEM classes. Many students struggling in STEM classes especially feel that they are not "smart" enough, but the simple fact is that no one is perfect. Everyone has room for improvement, and a little help from someone else can be all it takes. Since I went through high school and a year in college, I love being able to lend a helping hand to younger students struggling with classes or standardized testing. I believe everyone can succeed, and I want to help students reach their potential.

My passion is for the Classics, for preserving and communicating the wonderful depths of knowledge which have been the core of education for the past 2000 years. Latin and Greek literature has shaped much of the development our civilization and those students who endeavor to contribute to its preservation and appreciation deserve to be supported.In addition to background and love for the Classics, shown through my BA from the University of Pittsburgh and a pending MA from King's College London, I also have qualifications in various areas of history (I double-majored for my BA), a field which works hand-in-hand with the Classics. It is similarly focused on the preservation of knowledge and is, I believe, instrumental in understanding many of the important issues which we face today.While I love history, my favorite subject to tutor is Latin. I absolutely love the language and love the opportunity to help others uncover the vast richness of literature written in Latin.Being an older and almost exclusively written language, Latin is not an easy subject for which to innovate teaching methods. There is, however, an opportunity to expand on traditional teaching methods by incorporating some of the advances made in teaching modern languages, primarily by using more speaking and listening exercises.Outside of tutoring, my main hobby is music. I am a singer-songwriter and I also help other local artist by leasing my home recording equipment which affords me with ample opportunities to interact with a wide variety of people.

I know that students pursuing this goal work hard and I am excited to help them achieve it to the best of their ability.Regarding my experience as a music teacher I have taught beginning to advanced violin, viola, cello and bass as well as both SL and HL IB Music (which includes in depth work in music history, theory and analysis). I also work as an IB Examiner, giving me a unique perspective on the range of talent around the world in this area. IB Music is a particularly comprehensive course but when approached well, very rewarding in terms of it's benefits to your understanding and appreciation of music.

My approach to teaching is an active one. I engage students in discussions that foster higher level thinking. I believe all children can learn, therefore I have high expectations for my students. It is always my duty to create an atmosphere that is conducive to learning. I include interesting learning activities into my lessons that grab the attention of the learners and inspire them to learn. I like for the students I encounter to explore meaning, engage in critical thinking, and conduct their own experiences. My ultimate goal is to improve student achievement with a quality of instruction that prepares students to influence the future.

I am EC-6 certified with the ESL certification for all grade levels. I have taught primary grades for 13 years and acquired two distinctions which are ESL Teacher of the Year, and Outstanding Virtual Teacher. While teaching, I also went back to school and graduated with a Masters in School Counseling and plan to be a School Counselor in the future. Many of my adult learners have been faced with the daunting experience of having to relocate to a German-speaking country and I have prepared them to thrive in a new culture with a new language. Through a private Math and Reading Center, I guided children age's three to eight through math and reading assignments. One of the most rewarding teaching experiences I have had is with my current job as a clinician at Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes. As a clinician, I work one on one with students to improve their decoding and reading comprehension skills through a specifically designed reading program and lesson plan. I also worked with a variety students ranging from ages five to twenty-one, many of whom had diagnosed learning differences.While my background is primarily in English and Language Arts, I am not limited to just this subject areas. I also have knowledge in History and the Social Sciences, as reading comprehension and strong writing skills are at the base of mastering these courses especially at the higher-grade levels. In general one of my favorite aspects about tutoring is helping kids fall in love with reading and writing by improving their skills and confidence in this area particularly by engaging their interests.Another aspect I love about tutoring, is working with students who have learning differences and other special needs. I myself have struggled throughout my life with learning differences so I understand on a personal level both the challenges and triumphs students with learning differences go through. I also enjoy serving as a mentor to students with learning differences and sharing with them my own learning and executive functioning strategies that have helped me over the years.In each of these positions I have gained so much knowledge from the interactions I have had with students. I have learned to tailor my teaching style and method to meet each individual student's needs and personality. I also understand how important it is to have patience, compassion, empathy and acceptance when working with students.

I am currently studying Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I have had experience tutoring students of all ages through programs at my school and the local library. I also teach private percussion lessons to help students prepare for auditions and concerts. While I tutor many subjects, I especially enjoy helping students with math, physics, computer science, and music. In my free time, I enjoy playing percussion (much to my neighbors dismay) and tinkering with robotics. I also enjoyed scouting as a kid and still love hiking and exploring the outdoors.
