I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Morgan: Glasgow tutor

Certified Tutor

I am currently a senior at Truman State University studying History and minoring in English. I primarily tutor in two areas: math and history. Since the two subjects are very different, my tutoring styles differ for each. My goal as a tutor is see my students succeed on their own. When working with Statistics students I go through their homework one problem at a time. I will talk the student through the first problem and then will give a problem with similar conditions and have them attempt it on their own. Through this, the student will be learning how to complete the problem with low stakes and low stress. When tutoring in History, my goal is to fill in the missing gaps. To do this, I facilitate a conversation about the subject, whether that be the French Revolution or any other historical event. By having a conversation, dry historical information becomes more interesting and memorable.
I began tutoring with Varsity Tutors in the Fall of 2015. Before that, I have experience working at my high school tutoring as well as working with younger kids and getting them interested in learning. In the Spring of 2017 I took the semester off from tutoring because I was studying abroad in Ireland, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. As a history major, visiting historical sites, such as Rome and Paris, really brought my history books to life and I cannot wait to incorporate this experience into my tutoring. I am an avid reader and will be graduating university with my bachelors in History within the next year.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe every student has the capability to learn and succeed, and that it is the responsibility of the teacher to help them achieve that.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

When having difficulties, I have found that breaking down the skill/concept into easier to understand parts helps the student better comprehend what is going on.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I have students talk to me about what is gong on in the text. By looking at the text closely, I will take the student through the text paragraph by paragraph and help them talk through it.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

When first starting to work with a student, I have found that listening to them is the most successful. By listening, I am able to better understand them as a person, how they learn, and where they are having problems. It makes it easier for the student to learn when I know what is going on.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Each student learns differently, so I try to speak the solution more if they are auditory learners. If they are visual learners, I emphasize showing them how to do it. If they are more hands-on learners, I will have them do multiple problems themselves.
