Certified Tutor

After a career that spanned several decades and having done international business in multiple markets and cultures, I have acquired and mastered skills that I would now like to transfer to new and fresh minds and help them in their respective career and professional endeavors.
While my occupation kept me dealing with technical matters and solutions to particular applications, it also allowed me to develop a rapport with colleagues and customers alike, in different countries and cultures. I've been involved in mentoring and training, not only my sales staff and administrative personnel, but also to educate the potential customers about the services or products I might have been promoting at the time.
I developed a program of monthly training technical seminars to Customers, that I also took to the University in Argentina, giving conferences to senior - soon to graduate - students throughout the country.
I always felt comfortable in transferring knowledge and help others achieve a better understanding of the subject at hand.

What is your teaching philosophy?

As my experience in teaching has been through one-on-one training and group seminars, I cannot define a certain philosophy except the objective of helping others achieve a better understanding of the subject at hand.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By understanding his or her learning process, and improving it as possible.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Keep the subject interesting by comparing it with real situations, if possible, and by helping him or her stay the course without losing the view of the objective.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Repeat explanations of the concept from different angles. Have him or her practice the skill as needed until full understanding is reached.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

If the reason is physiological, I wouldn't be able to help. However, if it is a matter of concentration and focus there are several techniques that could be tested.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Theory and practice are part of the same learning process. Practice makes it perfect.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

By associating that particular subject with something he or she can relate to, or also by fusion of reality and theory.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Comprehension and knowledge tests, concept evaluations, and student explanations of the material. How would he or she transfer that knowledge to others?

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By encouraging him or her to take on harder topics. Nobody is exempt of understanding something if it is properly explained.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I would chart his or her progress, based on any particular scale. For more abstract subjects, it would be more one-on-one discussion to determine what the student understands.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By focusing in areas that need improvement, once they are identified. If I need to go back to the basics, so be it.
