I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Jack

Certified Tutor

I am a recent graduate from Iowa State in Civil Engineering. I recently moved to Seattle to start a job with Habitat for Humanity working as a Construction Volunteer Lead. I pursued engineering because I enjoy using math and critical thinking to solve complex problems. I am also currently studying for the GRE so that I may apply for grad school next fall.

I enjoy all things active. I played ultimate frisbee for my university's club team and hope to find another team to play for here in Seattle. I am happiest when I leave civilization behind and enjoy the outdoors. I love camping, hiking, backpacking, and I recently got into rock climbing.

As a tutor, I believe it is my job to provide supplemental instruction that is tailored to my students' needs and learning style. Listing to a teacher explain how to solve a math problem is not everybody's favorite way to learn. Sometimes it just takes someone willing to patiently answer any and all questions. Sometimes it requires someone to show a different technique. Everyone has the ability to learn, you just have to find the right way.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Everyone has the ability to learn, you just have to find the way that works best for you.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Try to understand why they aren't learning everything they should in the classroom.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Find their ideal learning style and show them how to take advantage of it.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Explain it differently or show them a different method.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Make sure they understand and feel comfortable asking any and all questions.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Try to link it to their dreams and goals in life. Show them what they could do if they master the subject.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would show and remind them of the progress they've already made.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Once I have gone through it with them once or twice, I would ask them to teach or explain it to me. I would ask a lot of questions to make sure they are not just repeating what I first taught them.
