I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I graduated with my Bachelor's degree in Economics with minors in Mathematics and Political Science from Baylor University in May 2009. I also graduated from the honor's college program, the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core. After finishing school I decided to pursue an alternative certificate in order to teach high school mathematics. I took teaching courses and did my student teaching through the Texas Teaching Fellows during the summer of 2010. I then worked at a local high school until my oldest son was born in April 2011. Since then I have been a stay at home mom to my 3 wonderful children. They are now ages 4, 2, and 4 months! I have been preparing students for the SAT and ACT for the past year as well as tutoring in math, government, economics and history. I love empowering my students to believe in what they can do and gain confidence in academics!

What is your teaching philosophy?

I want to empower my students to have confidence in themselves and their abilities.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In the first session, I like to spend time getting to know the student and their goals so we can set goals for our time together.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Lots and lots of practice!

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I help students stay motivated through lots of encouragement and practice. I feel like the more practice a student gets on a concept, the more confident and motivated they become.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would break the concept down as much as possible to help the student understand. If that didn't work, we would try every approach possible until the student is successful.
