Christi: Orange tutor
Certified Tutor
My experience includes two years as a middle school teacher and five years homeschooling. I am certified for Generalist 4-8, Special Education EC-12, and ESL Supplement. My Associate’s degree is in Liberal Arts from St. Philip’s College and my Bachelor’s degree is in General Studies from West Texas A&M University.
My most recent position involved teaching 6th – 8th grade in a self-contained Adaptive Behavior classroom. I worked with students with behavioral and emotional disorders in a confined setting. I built relationships, through self-discipline and consistency, with students who had otherwise been given up on. By building successful relationships, I have had a high level of achievement in working with my students and their families. I have witnessed growth of all my students. I provided ongoing support and expertise through comprehensive assessment, planning, implementation, and overall evaluation. I worked with both general and special education students. I have had to re-evaluate how I monitor learner’s progress due to the number of learners I served and have learned to be proactive when problems arise. I have developed areas of strength in organization, time management, and communication.
It is my goal to combine my range of experience and expertise with my ability to be a compassionate, enthusiastic, intelligent teacher who will make a positive contribution to your tutoring sessions.

What is your teaching philosophy?
There is "evidence that rigor, analysis, writing, editing, and hard work by students and teachers yield better results than either mindless test prep or endless whining about testing." (Reeves, Douglas B.)
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
First, I would like to get to know my student a little better. What is his/her learning style? What is enjoyable, and how can I incorporate that into our sessions? I want to ensure my students learn at their optimal capacity.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Teach lifelong learning skills. Do not just teach the problem; teach the solution.
