Scott

Certified Tutor

I have a Masters of Arts in History from American Military University and a Bachelors of Science in Communications from East Carolina University. My history teaching background focuses mainly on American History, Military History from Ancient Rome to present day and political science. I am a qualified military history instructor and work on a daily basis with college level students in small group and one-on-one situations in discussing Military History and the political ramifications of decisions that lead to military conflict. I also enjoy opportunities to work with International students on proper use of language and grammar as well as understanding graduate level history concepts. While my range of interest and instruction is varied, I am most passionate about History, specifically American History and the politics surrounding the formation of our country. In my experience helping struggling students understand History in a fun and interesting way that steers away from dates and names is most rewarding to me. I am a firm proponent of understanding history and the events that led us to certain points in time. I believe a firm education is absolutely necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. In my spare time, I enjoy reading and writing fiction, brewing, scuba diving and snowboarding.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe for a student to truly understand a subject they should be able to explain it to me in a clear, concise way.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Establish ground rules and expectations for our sessions. I want to understand the student's goals and desires to better develop a sound plan.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Go back to my teaching philosophy. If the student can understand the material well enough to explain it to me, they become independent and succeed.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Helping them to realize their potential, as well as their understanding of the material, will eventually flip the light on. Once the light comes on, anything is possible.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

The key is understanding where the difficulty stems from, and what kind of learner they are. Once I understand the root cause of the difficulty, I can develop a strategy they can use to succeed.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I have the student explain their knowledge of the subject up to that level for me. Once I know where they are, it gives me a baseline on their level of understanding from which we can build.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would get a feeling for what kind of interests the student has. This gives me a way of finding a commonality between the subject and their interests from which to drive them.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

It depends on thy type of learner they are. I would focus their learning type with a push for them to 'teach' the material well enough to understand it.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Practice...and positive reinforcement.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Test and quiz scores, as well as their ability to articulate the subject matter, give me a fairly strong reference from which I can evaluate their needs.
