Certified Tutor

I believe learning is a collaborative, dialogic, and lifelong process. As a tutor, I much prefer to be a guiding hand than a stern master. Regurgitation of facts is not the same as digestion of knowledge; I believe a tutor must set up circumstances for students to genuinely engage with the material as individuals.

I specialize in reading, writing, literature, and public speaking. I wholeheartedly believe that reading and writing both happen at the level of the sentence, and nowhere else. Recognizing this fact renders comprehension and composition obstacles far more manageable. Furthermore, the two activities are inseparable: to write is to learn to read, and vice versa. Similarly, speaking bolsters facility with language on the page, and vice versa.

For several years, I was the lead Writing Tutor at Bennington College, a school renowned for its literature department. While a student at Bennington, I studied literature, music, and French. I graduated with honors, and was the commencement speaker for the class of 2011. After graduating, I ran an acting camp, and then taught English in Tibet for eight months. Since returning, I have written CCSS-aligned English Language Arts curricula for grades 9-12.
