I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am a graduate of University of Nevada Reno. I received my Bachelor of Education with a minor in multiculturalism and technology. I graduated with my master's from Nova University in educational administration, and started my PhD at Argosy University. Since graduation, I have been teaching middle school math, elementary and math coach for a very large school district in Florida. I also, have an endorsement in Florida to teach ESOL. As a math teacher, I had the highest math score for all elementary schools in Saint Lucie County and writing. I believe all students can learn, but the methods may need to be differentiated for different learning styles and levels. I am most passionate about math and writing. In my experience, helping struggling students prepare for Standardized Tests, we always seem to have the most fun (with remarkable advancements) prepping for the Critical Math skills and Writing portions of the exams. I am a firm proponent of education, believing it to be absolutely necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, cooking and spending time with my family. I like to travel and spend Christmas on the big island of Hawaii because my daughter and only grandchild live in Kona.

What is your teaching philosophy?

All students can learn, as long as one meets their learning style.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student, but more importantly, let them get to know me so we can build a relationship.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By building their self-esteem.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Give students a sense of control.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Find out where the difficulty lies and try different strategies to help motivate the student.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Graphic organizers. Also, try to relate the comprehension using the student's prior knowledge about a book or movie they watched, and relate the two.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Validate the students' concerns and be upbeat about the content. Positive attitude.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Be positive myself, and let students know that everybody struggles, but that I am there for them to help them through their struggles.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Conversational exchange, feedback from student, and make harder concepts shorter.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Offer praise and acknowledge students' accomplishments, both in private and in front of their classmates. Always start with a positive statement, and then you can start referring to what they need to work on.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I ask a couple of questions during and after each lesson.
