Certified Tutor

My intellectual strength is based in the medicals sciences. At UT Dallas I majored in neuroscience, and I intend to someday become a clinical neurologist and medical school lecturer. I have a passion for brain sciences and it comes in part from a firm grasp on the underlying sciences. My understanding of biology is well developed and constantly growing as I enjoy reading scientific literature. During my undergraduate education I also worked at UT Southwestern Medical School- conducting research in internal medicine and rheumatology. It was a wonderfully challenging experience that taught me a wide variety of lab techniques.
In my masters program at UNT Health Science Center, the depth and breadth of my knowledge expanded exponentially. Learning anatomy from a human body donor was a life changing experience. It filled me with a deep respect for the knowledge I was gaining, and I spent months learning everything possible from my donor. It took a great deal of time and dedication to reach proficiency in that level of anatomy, but challenges are just opportunities to reach new heights.
My teaching experience began as an undergraduate student at UT Dallas. I tutored for Neuropharmacology as well as Neuroanatomy. These were two of the most difficult upper level electives in the Brain and Behavioral Sciences school; I loved the challenge that these courses presented.
The majority of my teaching experience comes from Collin College, where I serve as faculty in Anatomy and Physiology. This position has been instructive to me, I have become a better teacher and I continue to be very passionate about education.
I tutor in Anatomy, Physiology, Biology and Chemistry. Of these, my favorite is Physiology because I love the integrative nature of the human body. We break down the topic in organ systems but in reality everything is happening at the same time, no physiological mechanism works in a vacuum.
In my free time I enjoy spending time with friends and family, swimming, hiking with my two dogs, and archery. I love reading historical fiction and fantasy and occasionally writing short stories. My family and friends are very important to me and I appreciate their constant love and support. I have a good sense of humor and I am easy to talk to. Overall, I am a person that lives to help others. I love volunteering and I work with hospice patients every week because I think it is important to give back to the community.
I hope that this has given you a better sense of what I have to offer as a tutor. I look forward to hearing from you and I hope I can become a part of your education toolbox! Whether you are preparing for a test or struggling in a class, I will be there for you to help you achieve your goals!

What is your teaching philosophy?

Teaching is about giving the student the tools to approach challenging material with confidence and the background knowledge to achieve growth!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

At the first session we find the 'trouble' areas and start actively building strategies so that the student can solve the problems / questions when I'm not there.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

First I determine the type of learner the student is (Visual, Aural, Reading/Writing, or Kinesthetic) and then I teach them strategies to exploit their strengths to conquer any challenge. Most students just need the one-on-one time so that someone can support them and build their confidence.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I like to cover a section of material, then try some practice questions. And each time, I try something a little bit different until I find something that the student really likes. I'm upbeat and friendly. I encourage students to celebrate each victory.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I can explain most things in many different ways. I use a lot of analogies, putting things into perspective for the students. We draw it out or construct a model. I have a huge library of educational YouTube videos to give a little 'assignments'.
